The transition to P2P networking allows Algorand nodes to connect with Permissionless Repeaters globally, facilitating the distribution of blocks, transactions, and participation messages across multiple independent paths. This architecture not only strengthens resistance to censorship but also ensures that no single infrastructure provider can throttle traffic, thus enhancing decentralization.

However, enabling P2P can increase data usage, and operators are advised to monitor bandwidth and peer connections. While the default setting only allows outbound connections, users can opt to permit inbound connections if desired.

A single TCP connection is used, multiplexed with libp2p’s Yamux, while transactions are disseminated via gossipsub with adaptive fan-out. Peer discovery is maintained through DNS seeds, followed by a Kademlia DHT, ensuring an up-to-date list of peers. Furthermore, the system incorporates peer-scoring and rate-limiting to mitigate spam and Sybil attacks.
