According to the research firm – Gartner Inc’s press release published on 30 April, top 10 grocers in the world will be using blockchain by 2025 to enable visibility to freshness, quality and production for food traceability and safety.
The press further highlighted the blockchain technology can be ideal to encrypt the data of food source, transit temperature and freshness of the food.
Leading grocers have adopted blockchain technology into operation. For example, Walmart required suppliers of leafy greens to use a blockchain based farm-to-store tracking system. Besides, Unilever and Nestlé are now using blockchain technology to trace food contamination.
Blockchain technology is considered by many grocers as a tool to build trust and confidence in customers. As Joanne Joliet, senior research director at Gartner said “Blockchain can help deliver confidence to grocer’s customers, and build and retain trust and loyalty.”
